Why Bimbo Was Right

Last night we were discussing who's better: Pablo Picasso or Andy Warhol? I jumped to Picasso because he changed human consciousness with images that blurred forms into flat colors and unspeakable visual ideas.

But because I am an American of the new media-saturdated world, my compatriot Warhol really takes the cake. He is like Toqueville. How can art people be snobs after Andy? He knew we all watch the same TV, all live in the same country of the same images, a universal connection between people as deep and lasting as the visual blow Picasso dealt to individual eyes.

You can be watching TV and see Coca-Cola, and you know that the President drinks Coke, Liz Taylor drinks Coke, and just think, you can drink Coke, too. A Coke is a Coke and no amount of money can get you a better Coke than the one the bum on the corner is drinking. All the Cokes are the same and all the Cokes are good. Liz Taylor knows it, the President knows it, the bum knows it, and you know it." - AW
